A fight for territory
You may have seen a peacock dancing to seduce the peahens. But have you ever seen a territory fight between two peacocks?
Here is an account of a fight between two peacocks, fighting for supremacy and rights for the territory.
Like many of stories from Gundmi, this one begins with me walking along the village road with the camera, looking around for anything that moves. Unbeknownst to me, Raju the neighbour's dog was out for a walk behind me as well. He plays a role in the story, later.
Behind the thick bushes on one side of the road, I spot two peacocks standing beside each other. Now, there are many peafowls in Gundmi, and this on its own isn't much of an interesting sight. But what made it special was out of the blue, they start circling each other.
One of the peacock jumped, kicking up the dirt everywhere, starting a 10 mins long show off of strength and grit.
One after another, they would jump up and the other one would get startled. This repeated many times, for a while.
According to wikipedia, these fights between the males decided the hierarchy and the status in a group.
They weren't hurting each other, but definitely threatening to do so!
Just when this display of aggression was hitting high notes, our dog Raju took keen interest in chasing them away. In no time, both the birds took to the air, and vanished behind the coconut trees. With no conclusion reached in the fight, perhaps it was a draw?
