ನೀರು ಕಾಗೆಗಳು ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಎತ್ತರದ ಮರಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಗದ್ದೆಗಳ ಅಂಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತು ಬಿಸಿಲು ಕಾಯಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಇರುವ ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸುವುದು ಬಹಳ ಸುಲಭ. ಗುಂಡ್ಮಿಯ ಸಿಗಡಿ ಗುಂಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವಾಗಲು ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ.
Cormorants are plenty in Gundmi. They can be seen drying out their wings on top of tall trees or edges of paddy fields. It is a pleasure to watch them dive into shallow waters to catch their prey and swallow them. They are not easily frightened by people, especially when they are perched on tall trees.
ಗೀಜಗನ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳ ಫೋಟೋ ತೆಗೆಯುವುದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಗಡಿಬಿಡಿಯ ಕೆಲಸ! ಯಾವಾಗಲು ಆ ಕಡೆ ಈ ಕಡೆ ಹಾರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಈ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಬಹಳ ಶಬ್ಧ ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ತಾಳೆ ಮತ್ತು ತೆಂಗಿನ ಮರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಗೂಡು ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತವೆ. ಗಂಡು ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಅರಸಿನ ಬಣ್ಣ, ಹೆಣ್ಣುಗಳು ಬೂದು ಬಣ್ಣ. ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ.
Baya weaverbirds are typically found in Gundmi during monsoon. They build their nests on palm and coconut trees, and many can be seen hanging from the trees at the same time. They are very agile and noisy birds. It takes quite an effort to photograph them, given their constant movement.
ನೀರು ನಾಯಿಗಳು ಗುಂಡ್ಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸದೆ ಬಹಳ ವರ್ಷಗಳೇ ಆಗಿದ್ದವು ಎಂದು ಹಿರಿಯರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರುನಾಯಿಗಳು ಪಡುಕೆರೆ ಹೊಳೆಯ ಆಸುಪಾಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತಿವೆ!
ಹೊಳೆತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತು ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಾಯುತಿದ್ದ ನನಗೆ ನೀರುನಾಯಿ ನೋಡಿ ಬಹಳ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ಆಯಿತು. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿರುವ ಈ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ನಾನು ಸಮಯ ಸಿಕ್ಕಾಗ ಯಾವಾಗಲು ಹೊಳೆಯ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾ ಇರುವೆನು!
Smooth-coated otters are a rare sight here in Gundmi. They haven’t been spotted for years but have been making a comeback in the recent years. They are a vulnerable species, found in and around the backwaters.
ಗೂಬೆಗಳ ಜಾತಿಗೆ ಸೇರುವ ಈ ಹಿಂಸ್ರಪಕ್ಷಿ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುವುದು ಬಹಳ ಅಪರೂಪ. ದಟ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿರುವ ಮರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಈ ಗೂಬೆಗಳು ಸಂಜೆ ಮತ್ತು ರಾತ್ರಿ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಹಾರ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತವೆ. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದೆ.
These hawk-owls are very nocturnal, and it was a chance that I spotted them in a thick wooded area. So far, I haven't had such luck again!

These parakeets are hard to spot amid the greenery. Typically found on tall trees, they do come down to feast on fruits. Very noisy when they fly around.
ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಂಡ್ಮಿಗೆ ಬರುವ ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು, ಭತ್ತದ ಗದ್ದೆಗಳ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಹಾರವನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಕಂದು ಬಣ್ಣದ ಈ ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸುವುದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಷ್ಟ! ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮತ್ತು ಗಂಡು ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳ ಬಣ್ಣ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ.
ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಬೆಳಕಿರದ ಸಂಜೆಯ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದರಿಂದ ನನಗೆ ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳ ಫೋಟೋ ತೆಗೆಯಲು ಸುಮಾರು ವಾರಗಳೇ ಬೇಕಾದವು!

Greater painted-snipes are monsoon visitors to Gundmi. They are typically found in shallow watered paddy fields, wading to find their food. Unless one gets close to the bird, they are hard to spot and typically fly away quickly. It took a good week for me to photograph these beautiful creatures.
ಮರಕುಟಿಕಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಒಣಗಿ ಹೋದ ಮರಗಳು, ತೆಂಗಿನ ಮರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಕ್ಕಿನಿಂದ ಬಡಿದು ಆಹಾರ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಹಾರುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಸುಂದರ.
Woodpeckers are quite common and can be seen on coconut trees and dried/dead trees usually. They make quite the noise when they dig up the tree branches for food!
ಚೀಪ್ ಚೀಪ್ ಎಂದು ಶಬ್ದ ಮಾಡುವ ಈ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಬಹಳ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ. ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಲಿದು ಗೂಡು ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತವಂತೆ, ಆದರೆ ಒಮ್ಮೆಯೂ ಇದರ ಗೂಡು ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ! ಹೂವಿನ ಗಿಡಗಳು, ಪೊದೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆಹಾರ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತವೆ.
Tailorbirds are small birds, very common here in Gundmi. They make loud ‘cheep, cheep’ noise and usually found among small bushes and flowering plants.
ಮಂಗಟ್ಟೆ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಮಳೆಗಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಗುಂಡ್ಮಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗು ತಿಳಿದು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ! ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸ್ವರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಗುವ ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಗುಂಪು ಗುಂಪಾಗಿ ಎತ್ತರದ ಮರಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಳಿತಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಹಾರುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಸುಂದರ. ಮಳೆ ಕೋಗಿಲೆ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆ!
Hornbills are monsoon visitors that stay in Gundmi throughout the rains. They signal their arrival with loud sounds. They typically perch on tall trees, and also have a beautiful flying pattern.
ವರ್ಷದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಋತುವಿನಲ್ಲೂ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುವ ನವಿಲುಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿಗೆ ಜಾಸ್ತಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ ಗುಂಡ್ಮಿಯ ಜನರು. ಕಾಂಡ್ಲದ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಇವೆ. ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಡು ನವಿಲುಗಳ ಸುಂದರ ನೃತ್ಯ ಯಾವಾಗಲು ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುವುದು.
ಸಂಜೆ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸ್ವರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಗುತ್ತವೆ, ತೆಂಗು ಮತ್ತಿತರ ಎತ್ತರದ ಮರಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಯಾವಾಗಲು ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಎರಡು ಗಂಡು ನವಿಲುಗಳು ಹೊಡೆದಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದೂ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದೆ!
Peafowl are plenty and can be seen all year long here in Gundmi. They live in the mangrove forest on the riverbank. They make loud calls and are usually perched on tall coconut trees.
Peacocks dance frequently during the monsoon season, and I’ve seen adult males fighting for territory as well!
ಹೆಸರು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಬಕ ಎಂದು ಇದ್ದರೂ ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ನೋಡಲು ಕಾಗೆಯಷ್ಟು ದೊಡ್ಡದಿವೆ. ಕೆರೆ, ಹೊಳೆ, ಭತ್ತದ ಗದ್ದೆಗಳ ಸುತ್ತ ಮುತ್ತ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವುಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ಇದ್ದರೂ ಹತ್ತಿರದಿಂದ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುವುದು ಅಪರೂಪ.
Little herons can be found near small ponds, river and paddy fields during monsoon. Although they are common, it is rare to see them up close.
ಗುಂಡ್ಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೂವಿನ ಗಿಡಗಳು ಇದ್ದಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ಈ ಸೂರಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಗಿಡದಿಂದ ಗಿಡಕ್ಕೆ, ಹೂವಿನಿಂದ ಹೂವಿಗೆ ಹಾರಿ ಮಕರಂದ ಹೀರುವ ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ನೋಡಲು ಸುಂದರ.
These sunbirds fly from flower to flower, plant to plant , sucking the nectar from flowers. They can be easily spotted among the flowering plants.
ಚಿಟ್ಟೆಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಅನೇಕ ಜಾತಿಯ, ಬಣ್ಣ ಬಣ್ದದ ಚಿಟ್ಟೆಗಳು ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ. ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೊಂದು ಪುಟ್ಟ ನೀಲಿ ಬಣ್ಣದ ಚಿಟ್ಟೆ.
There are plenty of butterflies here in Gundmi. Their number increases during monsoon. This small specimen is just one of many beautiful, colourful butterflies.
ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಗದ್ದೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡಗಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುವುದು ಬಹಳ ಕಷ್ಟ. ಇವುಗಳ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಹೆಸರು ನಾನು ತಪ್ಪಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿರಬಹುದು. ನಿಮಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಹೆಸರು ಗೊತ್ತಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ದಯಮಾಡಿ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿ!
Watercocks are hard to spot. They are monsoon visitors and usually fly away at the first sign of trouble. They usually hide in the grass (paddy) and search for their food.
ಗುಂಡ್ಮಿಯ ಪರಿಸರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೀಟಗಳು ಅನೇಕ. ಹಲವಾರು ಜಾತಿಗಳ ಕೀಟಗಳು ಯಾವಾಗಲು ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಬಣ್ಣ ಬಣ್ಣಗಳ ಕೀಟಗಳನ್ನು ಹತ್ತಿರದಿಂದ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಅನ್ಯ ಗ್ರಹಗಳ ಜೀವಿಗಳಿರುವಂತೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತವೆ! ಈ ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಕುದುರೆ ಎನ್ನುವ ಕೀಟ ತರಕಾರಿ ಗಿಡಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ.

Photography lets us see the details on these small birds which otherwise won’t be possible! Just look at those details on the feathers!
ಈ ಸುಂದರ ಕಪ್ಪು ಬಿಳಿ ಮಿಂಚುಳ್ಳಿ ಗುಂಡ್ಮಿಯ ಹೊಳೆ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಮಾತ್ರ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದೆ. ಇವು ಮೀನು ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ವಿಧಾನ ಬೇರೆ ಮಿಂಚುಳ್ಳಿಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಭಿನ್ನ. ಈ ಮಿಂಚುಳ್ಳಿ ಗಾಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಳಿದಾಡಿ, ಒಂದೇ ಕಡೆ ರೆಕ್ಕೆ ಬಡಿಯುತ್ತ ನಿತ್ತು , ಮೀನುಗಳಿಗೆ ಗುರಿಯಿಟ್ಟು ನಂತರ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿ ಮೀನು ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತವೆ. ನೋಡಲು ಬಹಳ ಆಕರ್ಷಕ.
Pied kingfishers have a different style with which they catch their fishes. They hover above the river surface, aim, then dive into water with precise accuracy and catch their prey. I’ve seen these cute little birds only on the banks of the backwater river.

These water skippers are very busy creatures that live in the wells, ponds. They are quite common during monsoon. They are called ‘Jesus bugs’ as well.
ಭತ್ತದ ಕದಿರು ತಿನ್ನಲು ಬರುವ ಕೆಂದಲೆ ಗಿಳಿಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಬಹಳ ಸುಂದರ. ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುವುದು ಜಾಸ್ತಿ. ಗಂಡು ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಗಿಳಿಗಳ ಬಣ್ಣ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ.
These parakeets are very pretty! But they will steal rice grains as shown in the picture. They are common during monsoon season.
ಉದ್ದ ಕುತ್ತಿಗೆಯ ಈ ಬಕಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸುವುದು ಬಹಳ ಸುಲಭ. ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ. ಕಪ್ಪೆ, ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಹಾವುಗಳನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವು ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ರೆಕ್ಕೆ ಬಡಿದು ಹಾರುವುದು ನೋಡಲು ಸುಂದರ.
These long necked herons are easy to spot. Found in many numbers during monsoon. They eat frogs, small snakes. They have a beautiful flying pattern. Typically aren’t shy of humans.
ಮುದ್ದಾದ ಈ ಗೂಬೆಗಳು ಹಗಲು ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುವುದು ಅಪರೂಪ. ಸಂಜೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂಜಾನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯಿಂದಿರುವ ಈ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಲಕ್ಕಿ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
These cute little owlets are hard to spot during the day. They are busy during late evening and early morning. They are in many numbers here, albeit hard to spot.

These munia are found all year around here, although easy to spot them during monsoon. They typically forage in smaller groups.
6-8 ಅಡಿ ಉದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುವ ಈ ಉಡಗಳು ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುವುದು ಕಡಿಮೆ. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇರುವ ವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತ್ತು. ಅವುಗಳ ಆಹಾರ, ಮತ್ತಿತರ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗೆ ಏನು ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ!
These lizards can grow more than 4-6 feet and they are a rare sight. I have no clue what they eat, where do they spend their time! But they are fearsome to look at.

The size of these hornbills are a bit of surprise for the first time viewer! They are big birds with weird looking big beaks. Its a sight to behold to see them flying slowly.

Out of 2 types of bulbuls that I’ve seen in Gundmi, these ones are hard to spot. Typically found on dense bushes and plants.

Mongooses are very common here in Gundmi. They, found either in single or a group of 2-4, typically forage garden, paddy fields.
ಈ ಸುಂದರ ಹಸಿರು ಬಣ್ಣದ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ವರ್ಷದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲೂ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಚುರುಕಾಗಿ ಅತ್ತಿತ್ತ ಹಾರಿ ನೊಣ, ಕೀಟಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತವೆ. 2-3 ಜಾತಿಗಳಿದ್ದು ಗುಂಡ್ಮಿಗೆ ವಲಸೆಯೂ ಬರುತ್ತವೆ.
These quick birds are found in many number all year around. There are 2-3 species of bee-eaters in Gundmi, including the one that migrate during winter.

This is a very fascinating insect behaviour: female wasps of this species sting a cockroach twice, delivering venom. Wasp stings precisely, to paralyse the cockroach and controls the escape reflex of the cockroach. Then the wasp leads the victim to the wasp's burrow and lays egg. During Monsoon, there are thousands of Egrets here in Gundmi. They are friends of farmers, they don’t mind being at the close proximity to paddy field workers.
ಎಳೆ ಉಡಗಳು ವರ್ಣಮಯವಾಗಿವೆ. ದೇಹದ ಮೇಲೆ ಚುಕ್ಕೆ ಚುಕ್ಕೆಗಳಿದ್ದು, ಬಾಲವು ಉಳಿದ ದೇಹಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಎರಡರಷ್ಟು ಉದ್ದ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಗುವುದು ಅಪರೂಪ.
Young monitor lizards are very pretty. They have colourful spots and patterns. Hard to spot, but easy to identify.
ಹೆಸರು ಕಾಡು ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಎಂದಿದ್ದರೂ ಇವು ಬೆಕ್ಕಿನ ಜಾತಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಲ್ಲ. ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವೇ ಬಾರಿ ನೋಡಲು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದ ಈ ನಿಶಾಚರಿಗಳು ನೋಡಲು ಮುಂಗುಸಿಯಂತೆ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ತೆಂಗಿನ ಮರಗಳನ್ನು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಹತ್ತುವ ಈ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಬಾಲ ಬಹಳ ಉದ್ದ.
These palm civets are nocturnal and hard to spot. I’ve seen these mongoose-like creatures only few times. They can climb trees very easily. This picture is taken very late in the night, with the help of handheld torch in one hand and a heavy camera on other!
